You gain more as you earn enough experience points to level up. The RPG elements were already partly covered above you are given a series of stat points and skill points to various abilities. It’s an incredibly evocative setting and doesn’t hesitate to stray into the strangest places.ĭeath Trash plays out like an open-ish world action game with RPG elements. There’s also a ridiculous amount of meat everywhere, ranging from drops on the floor to drops from the flesh abominations, and they are eaten raw to restore life. Even the towering Fleshkraken looks a lot like a giant tree crossed with a Kraken and made entirely out of flesh. Stephan’s pixel art has an incredible amount of charm, from all the various human characters and their attire to all the flesh abominations you have to fight. Said outside world is incredibly stylized, pretty…and dangerous. The game is set in a similar post-apocalyptic world, where “cosmic horrors long for humanity but meet punks with shotguns.” Your character is cast out of the “Universal Society” due to being afflicted by some mysterious infection, and the game’s overarching quest is for you to explore the outside world to determine the nature of this infection. When you start the game, you have to select a difficulty setting of three to choose from, pick any optional challenge modifiers (these are not recommended until after a first playthrough), and then further design your character’s appearance, abilities before you start. The Germany-based development team known as Crafting Legends is mostly project lead Stephan Hövelbrinks, responsible for the art, most of the design and programming, with additional personnel Christian Heusser assisting on the latter two and James Dean composing the eerie, ambient soundtrack. It is somewhat remarkable that the game has been in the making for six years, but that becomes very understandable once you understand that there’s a small team behind it. Imagine an incredibly eerie soundtrack, fused with a stylized pixel art aesthetic depicting all manners of grotesque creatures, set in a post-apocalyptic setting. Once in a while, along comes a game that is positively drenched in the atmosphere. Dead Estate – PC Review - September 2, 2023.
